Rick Riker (Drake Bell) is a textbook loser. He is weak, painfully shy and, at best, only moderately attractive. That changes abruptly when he is stung by a genetically modified dragonfly during a laboratory visit. Now he is Dragonfly, a full-fledged superhero with supernatural powers. His slightly senile Uncle Albert (Leslie Nielsen) and friend Trey (Kevin Hart) are thrilled, and Rick suddenly begins to impress the beautiful Jill Johnson (Sara Paxton). The only problem is that he has not yet mastered the superhero routine. While saving humanity, Dragonfly sometimes overshoots the mark with a complete lack of skill, and his flying still has plenty of room for improvement.
The creators of cult films such as The Naked Gun and the commercially successful Scary Movie series have struck again. This time, the team around producer David Zucker and director Craig Mazin has taken on the world of superheroes. Whether Batman or Superman, Fantastic Four or X-Men, no one escapes unscathed in Superhero Movie. Spider-Man is hit especially hard, both as the web-slinging hero and as shy civilian Peter Parker.
Zucker and company pull out every stop that defines a completely deranged parody and has made their films from the 1980s to today—from The Kentucky Fried Movie to Scary Movie 4—so distinctive. Toilet humor, fart jokes, suggestive gags and crude humor below the belt are consequently all present. An all-star cast rounds out this heroic festival of jokes. Alongside rising newcomers such as Drake Bell and Sara Paxton are comedy veterans including Leslie Nielsen and character actors such as Christopher McDonald. As a special treat, Baywatch star Pamela Anderson makes a cameo as the Invisible Girl.
