New Patents for Kaspersky Lab

Innovative virus-fighting methods developed by the Russian IT security specialist have been patented

Kaspersky Lab has secured patents in Russia and the United States for three new technologies developed in-house. The Russian patent was granted for a novel system for detecting and removing rootkits. The US authorities granted one patent for a new antivirus scanning method with variable settings, resulting in faster antivirus performance. Kaspersky Lab received the second US patent for a novel implementation of an object-oriented component infrastructure.

Andrey Sobko, Technology Expert at Kaspersky Lab, developed the rootkit detection system described in the Russian patent. It creates snapshots of individual areas of the operating system and registry before and after certain drivers are loaded. These snapshots are compared so that changes can be detected quickly. This method increases the effectiveness of rootkit detection and marks an important step toward defending against them efficiently.

The technology behind US Patent No. 7,392,544 was conceived by Mikhail Pavlushik. This method allows variable scan settings to be changed and adjusted dynamically. It ensures both high antivirus performance and the blocking of malware epidemics at an early stage.

The infrastructure underlying the second US patent, No. 7,418,710, was developed by Andrey Duhvalov and Andrey Krukov, Chief Software Architect and Chief Software Expert at Kaspersky Lab, as well as Eugene Kaspersky himself. It supports the efficient development of portable applications and systems that process complex hierarchical objects. The technology is currently unique and is now being used increasingly in the development of new products.

More than twenty additional Kaspersky Lab patent applications are currently pending in the United States and Russia.
