Because a large part of the world in ANNO 1404 consists of water and shipping plays a crucial role in the game, particular attention is paid to depicting the water.

But what makes the representation of water so special? Its most important characteristics include wave shape, wave movement, the reflection of light, and the refraction and absorption of light within the water. A world also contains different climate zones, which are apparent through different waves and colors. To reproduce all these characteristics, the simulation has to be divided into several stages, such as wave simulation and rendering.
