Hair and Fur Development

CG character Aki from "Final Fantasy: The Spirits within" made do with 60,000 strands of hair in 2001; rendering one second of the simulation at 24 fps took 36 hours. Merida’s wealth of curls from Pixar’s "Brave" required 111,700 strands of hair, but thanks to the enormous technical progress, only 8 minutes of rendering time at 24 fps. Thanks to the new TressFX hair technology, Lara Croft has 21,000 strands of hair that could be simulated in real time without rendering.

The true king of hair, however, is Sulley from "Monster University". His fur had around 5 million strands; rendering one second of film at 24 fps took a full 696 hours.

In the attachment you will find a PDF article from DP issue 06/13 about Lara Croft’s new head of hair, which was simulated with TressFX from Confetti Inc.
