In brief: The Television Academy announced the recipients of the 73rd Engineering Emmy Awards, recognising individuals, companies and organisations whose technical developments impressed the jury.
Netflix co-founder and then-CEO Reed Hastings was selected for an individual award. Netflix had previously received an Engineering Emmy in 2012; the Academy credited Hastings with helping reshape television distribution through cloud-based infrastructure, encryption and bookmarking technologies.
Company and technology honourees included Dolby Laboratories for continuing advances in picture and sound, ARRI for the SkyPanel family of LED soft lights, CEDAR Studio for audio-cleanup and restoration tools, Scriptation for digitising script workflows, and Teradek Bolt 4K for low-latency on-set monitoring.
Of particular interest to digital-content creators were Golaem Crowd for procedural crowd animation, Stephen Regelous for the AI-oriented Massive crowd-simulation system, and Chaos Group for the V-Ray renderer.
