Grass Valley announced an integrated titling module for its NewsEdit nonlinear editing system. Chyron’s Lyric graphics creation and playout software was also connected to NewsEdit, extending a news-production workflow documented in Digital Production’s Grass Valley archive.
The integration was intended to simplify titles and effects for news editors. Titles had often been added late in production, sometimes in a busy control room during a live broadcast. That last-minute process could introduce incorrect or inconsistent captions.
Chyron graphics inside NewsEdit
With Chyron software integrated into NewsEdit, editors could import existing graphics made with the iNFiNiT! product family or Duet SD and LE. A straightforward Chyron titling module inside NewsEdit allowed users to create titles and other graphics quickly.
For more elaborate work, editors could access the Lyric editing package through the same NewsEdit environment. The interface changed with the selected working mode and presented only the tools and information needed for that task.
Mike Cronk, then vice president of marketing at Grass Valley Group, said the combination gave news editors direct control over titling and effects. Rich Hajdu, then Chyron’s vice president of sales and marketing for the Americas, said the built-in module and import of iNFiNiT! and Duet files would help maintain a channel’s visual identity and improve the accuracy of graphics in individual reports.
The Digital News Production workflow
Grass Valley’s Digital News Production system supported end-to-end workflows based on DV, DVCPRO and MPEG. It covered feed ingest, media sorting, desktop browsing with third-party products, sequence assembly, full-resolution editing, rundown-based playout and real-time access to shared storage.
At its core was the Digital News Production Workgroup: FeedClip for interactive feed capture, NewsEdit for nonlinear editing and NewsQ for manual playback. These PC-based systems directly handled MPEG, DV and DVCPRO at data rates up to 50 Mb/s.
Grass Valley said avoiding pre-digitizing allowed NewsEdit to work almost twice as fast as competing products. The company described it as an open PC-based editor that removed the need for the record deck used by traditional cuts-only systems. Editors could view their edits during the process in a manner comparable to a tape-to-tape suite.
Lyric and Duet capabilities
Chyron positioned Lyric as the next step in on-air graphics creation and playout, drawing on more than three decades of character-generator development. Distributed workgroup support allowed content to be created on Windows NT or Windows 2000 PCs with OpenGL, then sent over a network to iNFiNiT!, Duet, Aprisa, NewsEdit or compatible graphics systems.
Lyric was resolution-independent across 525 and 625-line systems and 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios. Supported formats included Quantel, TrueType, Targa and TIFF.
The Duet SD platform included 3D animation, a clip player, dual-channel squeezeback and a dedicated iNFiNiT!-style keyboard. Lyric ITV could create material for interactive television set-top boxes using HTML, JavaScript and XML, with support for ATVEF transports A and B.
