Herzliya, Israel, 4 February 2002. Optibase announced the successful completion of trials conducted by the European VideoGateway Consortium. Under an EU research and development programme, the consortium had developed a video-streaming server for broadband networks.
Business television and IPTV tests
T-Systems tested VideoGateway for business-TV applications using live streaming, storage and on-demand retrieval, including integration with Sycomore’s PeakServer. Telecom Italia Lab deployed a television-over-IP application and tested interoperability between encoders and players over a corporate LAN, ADSL and the company’s pilot VDSL network.
Teracom carried out fixed and mobile e-learning trials covering PAL over IPoATM, Windows Media over IPoDVB-T and ISO/MPEG-4 over IPoDVB-T. The University of Athens evaluated the platform for distance learning, MPEG-4 transmission and playback, and adaptive transcoding.
Consortium assessment
Jay Plawner, Optibase Vice President of Marketing, said the varied trials were designed to validate VideoGateway as a high-performance streaming platform. The consortium combined Optibase technology with partner expertise in service design, integration and testing for broadband television applications.
Optibase’s former video business later became part of VITEC, which continues to develop IPTV and video-streaming systems.
