Sony introduced the HDW-750P HDCAM camcorder for European availability in September 2002. It offered HD acquisition at a price described as comparable to the launch price of Digital Betacam in the mid-1990s.
The camera was intended to make HD television production more economical than 35 mm or Super 16 workflows. It complemented the HDW-2000 HDCAM deck range, which played half-inch formats from Betacam through Digital Betacam and HDCAM.
Unlike the fully featured CineAlta HDW-F900, the HDW-750P recorded 25 progressive frames or 50 interlaced fields per second. This made it compatible with PAL post-production and broadcast equipment used in Europe.
Production functions included Memory Stick setup storage, familiar camera menus and an eight-second loop-recording mode. An optional downconverter enabled SD monitoring.
