Unlike comparable products, EyeTV compressed video to MPEG-1 before sending it to the computer. This reduced processing demands and storage requirements. Recordings could be authored to Video CD with the separately sold Roxio Toast Titanium and played in conventional DVD players. Saved as MPEG-1 movies, one hour occupied roughly 650 MB, allowing programmes to be watched later on a mobile Mac while travelling.

Elgato EyeTV also offered live-TV pause and a digital video recorder for scheduled recordings on a Macintosh. It targeted private and semi-professional users seeking a quick, uncomplicated tuner and recording solution rather than the professional video-editing market.

The German PAL edition of EyeTV was immediately available through Gravis shops and the Gravis online store for €249.90 including VAT. It required a Macintosh with USB and Mac OS X 10.2.
