Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, working with Ottonia Media GmbH, became the first German broadcaster to complete an entire concert production in Panasonic’s HD-D5 high-definition format. The occasion was Bernard Haitink’s inauguration as conductor of the Dresden Staatskapelle at the Kulturpalast.
The concert, featuring works by Weber, Beethoven and Brahms, had already aired on Arte in a conventional format on 6 October 2002. Japanese co-producer NHK planned to transmit the HD version.
Signals from eight HD cameras fed six Panasonic AJ-HD3700AE HD tape machines to support flexible post-production. The required outside-broadcast truck was hired from Alfacam in Belgium because no comparable mobile production unit was available in the German-speaking market.
