Quantel Digital Intermediate Platform for Star Wars Episode III

Lucas Digital acquired a Quantel iQ system as a grading platform, configured with Freeflow connectivity for a Pandora colour corrector.

“After working successfully with Quantel on Episode II, it was logical for us to acquire an iQ specifically for Episode III,” says Star Wars producer Rick McCallum. “It fits extremely well into our digital production pipeline as a grading platform and gives us exactly what we need for the grading process: immediate feedback and the ability to work around the edit.”

Quantel positioned iQ as the only system able to edit 2K material interactively at full resolution, mix resolutions and frame rates, and output different versions on the fly. The company said those capabilities had established it as a de facto standard for digital intermediate work during the previous year.

iQ systems were also installed at Cinecittà in Rome, Modern VideoFilm in Los Angeles, The Moving Picture Company in London, Eyes Post in Toronto, Retina in San Francisco and Post Logic in Los Angeles.
