The 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany is set to use HDTV as its production standard, with output in the 16:9 aspect ratio.
A match between Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart on 28 March offered an early demonstration of the format, with roughly four times the previous image resolution.
Germany’s Plazamedia and Belgian high-definition specialist Alfacam have been strategic partners since December 2003, concentrating on production for major international and European sporting events.
Plazamedia acts as general contractor for all 612 matches in Germany’s Bundesliga and second division. Alfacam will supply a large proportion of the outside-broadcast trucks for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The company launched Euro1080, the first HDTV channel, in January 2004.
