Television normally reaches viewers by terrestrial broadcast, satellite or cable, but TV over IP adds distribution through the internet. The service addresses IP-based media, including PCs with broadband connections, digitally equipped television sets and mobile devices receiving data over WLAN, UMTS or GPRS.
Bavaria Production Services, a specialist in broadcast operations, is one of the first full-service providers for this broadcasting model. Acting as a complete technical service provider, BPS creates and prepares digital content. Its work includes digitising, describing, managing and archiving programmes for transmission.
BPS uses technology from Grid-TV, part of the Artvoice group, to initialise the transmission networks. Sun Microsystems supplies the broadcast-server hardware. Distribution uses standard-definition television quality, although the platform is already technically capable of HD transmission.
