With the HD modules and MPEG capabilities introduced at IBC, Axon Digital Design’s Synapse family now comprises more than 90 modules. The modular system from Videor Technical’s Dutch partner is based on a 19-inch, 4U frame that accepts up to 18 plug-in modules and has space for a second redundant power supply. Modules can be controlled and configured locally from the integrated control unit or through an Ethernet connection and TCP/IP in a web browser.
Television Systems Limited installed a complete range of modular Axon Synapse components at the new BBC Broadcast Centre in London’s Media Village. Alongside standard distribution amplifiers and embedding and de-embedding cards, the installation includes the new Synapse SIM10 module.
The SDI distribution amplifier can generate on-screen information for signal monitoring. Error messages, metadata and audio levels can therefore be shown on a control monitor, with direct monitoring available for up to four of 16 audio channels. Video-signal problems appear as flashing warnings over the active image, as do Video Index and Wide Screen Signalling status indicators. Individual information and status displays can be enabled or disabled.
The Broadcast Centre system also integrates aspect-ratio converters, audio shufflers, a Video Index inserter, and analogue and digital distribution amplifiers. It can be expanded with HD modules for upconversion and downconversion, embedding and de-embedding, HD synchronisation, and HD distribution over coaxial cable and fibre. Axon Synapse also supports Dolby E encoding and decoding, with Dolby Digital AC-3 5.1 support planned.
