New environmental regulations will take effect across Europe on 1 January 2006, and Sony’s older CRT monitors would not comply. The company has therefore largely discontinued production of cathode-ray-tube monitors, including the popular PVM series. The remaining units are available only from existing stock.
Sony’s LMD series succeeds them, combining the control unit and panel in one device. The company’s new Chroma True Colour Processing Technology is used in the LMD-152, LMD-172W, LMD-212, LMD-232 and LMD-322 displays. Sony says it has addressed an LCD-specific problem in these monitors to provide colour reproduction matching the EBU colour space. The LMD-9050 is a nine-inch SD/HD monitor with an integrated HD-SDI connection.
From the manufacturer’s perspective, LCD monitors have major economic importance because the entire CRT infrastructure will be replaced over the coming years.
