With new HDTV-capable end devices, the consumer electronics industry is preparing for the hoped-for switch by consumers. After “HD ready” televisions have already been available in stores for some time, manufacturers at the International Consumer Electronics Fair Berlin (2. – 7.9.2005) are now showing not only improved models, for example from Philips, but also other components.
For when HDTV programmes can be received in Europe from the end of 2005, the requirements for digital recording devices will also change: If you want to record in HD resolution, you need recorders with high storage capacity. At IFA, Hitachi is presenting for the first time in Europe a multi-format DVD hard disk recorder with one terabyte of storage capacity. According to the manufacturer, the DV-DH1000W can record 128 hours in HD quality (at 17 MB per second) or 1,700 hours in standard resolution, setting new standards for the capacity of digital recorders.
According to its own statements, Hitachi wants to use IFA to test the European market’s readiness for such a recorder – the decision as to whether the DV-DH1000W will actually be distributed in Europe has not yet been made.
