As Dolby Laboratories announced at IBC, the three European broadcasters Premiere from Germany, the Canal+ Group from France and Great Britain’s BSkyB will broadcast their HDTV programs in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. The set-top boxes of the three broadcasters will be equipped with the audio technology accordingly. This will make the digital audio technology the de facto standard in Europe as well. Dolby Digital 5.1 has already become established for HDTV broadcasts in North America, Japan and Australia.
In addition to Dolby Digital 5.1, many broadcasters are already integrating Dolby Digital Plus into their set-top boxes today. The new codec is part of the DVB audio-video specifications and is prepared for the requirements of future delivery and audio storage systems. The features of the new technology include better sound reproduction, the flexibility to add additional audio channels in future and new coding standards. Backward compatibility with existing Dolby Digital home theater systems remains guaranteed.
At stand 210 in Hall 2, Dolby Laboratories is demonstrating HDTV broadcasts with Dolby Digital 5.1. The corresponding set-top boxes from the partner companies can be seen. The exhibition also provides an insight into Dolby Digital Plus.
