Adobe Systems announces the immediate availability of Macromedia Flash Lite 2 and Macromedia Flash Player SDK 7. Both software technologies form the basis for developing multimedia Flash-based user interfaces for mobile devices. Flash Lite 2 is the new version of Flash Player for use outside computers – for example in mobile phones or consumer electronics. Flash Player SDK 7 supports system integrators, consumer electronics companies and browser manufacturers in developing products and services that enable users to browse the web on the move and access websites with Flash content.

“Worldwide, users expect exceptional content and services on their mobile devices such as mobile phones, cameras and video players,” postulates Al Ramadan, Senior Vice President Mobile and Device Solutions at Adobe: “Flash Lite 2 and Flash Player SDK 7 expand the possiblities for mobile-phone and consumer-electronics manufacturers to develop appealing digital worlds of experience.”

Flash Lite 2 and Flash Player SDK 7 help OEM manufacturers of consumer electronics and mobile-network companies develop multimedia and customizable interfaces for a consistent user experience – regardless of devices, operating systems, processors used or display sizes. As part of the “Flash ecosystem,” which consists of the Flash authoring tool, the rendering engine in Flash Player and a worldwide community of, according to Adobe, more than two million developers and designers, Flash Lite 2 and Flash Player SDK 7 reduce the costs of creating and distributing multimedia content. In addition, corresponding content can be made available three to five times faster than with competing solutions, Adobe advertises.

Both Flash Lite 2 and Flash Player SDK 7 are based on Flash Player 7 and support ActionScript 2 as well as international Unicode. Other features include closer integration with mobile devices, more comprehensive data management, lower storage-space consumption and improved handling of XML data.

Flash Lite 2 is available now for download from Macromedia’s Labs website (see link below). A preview of an update for Flash Professional 8 can also be found there, with whose help designers and developers can better exploit the neew possibilities of Flash Lite 2.

According to Adobe, the first devices with Flash Lite 2 and Flash Player SDK 7 developments are expected during 2006. Many of the major mobile-device manufacturers such as Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson would already offer mobile phones with a Flash interface. In the last twelve months, the number of corresponding devices newly launched worldwide had increased from 12 to 45 million units and thus more than tripled.
