It has long been indispensable for pay TV, and security services will also play an essential role for IPTV and mobile services in future. Only if the content is encrypted and it is ensured that exclusively paying customers receive the content do most IPTV and mobile business models also pay off.
An important player in this business is the Dutch company Irdeto. The subsidiary of the South African media group Naspers was founded in 1969 and today specializes in content security for digital TV, mobile and IPTV. In March of this year, Irdeto acquired the rival company Philips Crypto Works and was thus able to expand its worldwide customer base by 100 to 300 customers.
At NAB, Irdeto announced that Debitel had selected its “Mobile Broadcast Conditional Access” solution to secure the new mobile TV service launching in parallel with the 2006 football World Cup. Debitel is the distribution partner of Mobiles Fernsehen Deutschland GmbH (MFD), the T-DMB license holder. Debitel will offer the TV content via suitable T-DMB mobile phones, for example the Samsung SGH-P900.
During NAB, Irdeto also announced that more than 4 million mobile phones are now equipped with its “Mobile Conditional Access” technology. The technology requires special chips, each of which is unique. Irdeto sells the chips to mobile-phone manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola or LG Electronics. Irdeto is also integrating the security technology, initially developed only for S-DMB, into T-DMB and DVB-H devices in cooperation with the manufacturers.
