Silex Media – that is what SGI’s former Business Unit Silicon Graphics Broadcast Europe (SGBE) will be called in future, whose business field was the broadcast and media sector in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Although Silex Media operates formally independently, as a wholly owned subsidiary of SGI Japan, which is itself jointly owned by SGI, NEC and NEC Soft, it nevertheless remains connected with SGI.
On the market, the spin-off will operate as an independent SGI reseller and, under the current agreement, will continue to supply SGI-based solutions to broadcast customers throughout Europe. The new company thus follows the model of its owner SGI Japan, which started in a similar way several years ago.
“The announcement is the consequence of a more cost-efficient new strategic approach with which we address some of our vertical segments that we want to develop further”, explains SGI CEO Dennis McKenna: “The new company offers the independence of a distribution partner and at the same time it has comprehensive experience and expertise in bringing in and integrating SGI solutions in the broadcast environment.”
The existing customers that Silex Media is taking over include Saarländischer Rundfunk, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), Südwestrundfunk (SWR), ProSiebenSat.1, Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) and Euskal Irrati Telebista (EiTB), the Basque regional television service. In future, SGI will serve customers outside Europe directly.
