IBC: DVS-SAN Adds Redundant Controllers

Redundant RAID 5 controllers increase throughput and resilience in DVS-SAN storage.

DVS Digital Video Systems will show DVS-SAN with updated controller technology at IBC in Amsterdam from 7 to 12 September 2006. The central real-time and near-line storage system combines higher performance with a lower price.

DVS designed the update around combined operation of real-time and non-real-time applications. Its RAID 5 controllers retain protection against disk failure, while controller redundancy keeps data accessible after a controller fails. DVS also claims higher data rates, providing more headroom for real-time work and improving non-real-time workflows. Workstations continue to connect over Fibre Channel, now at up to 4 Gbit/s per link. Real-time storage uses SAS disks combining the SCSI protocol with serial transport.

#DVS-SAN

DVS-SAN near-line storage also uses redundant RAID 5 controllers and 4 Gbit/s Fibre Channel connections, but employs SATA 2 disks for higher capacity at lower cost. It is intended for work without real-time requirements and can be combined with DVS-SAN real-time storage in hierarchical backup configurations for large digital-film datasets.

Senior product manager Jürgen Heger specified throughput above 700 MB/s in the minimum configuration, scalable beyond 2 GB/s. He also highlighted new diagnostics and data management through DVS Spycer for postproduction environments.
