IBC: Quantel Announces Software-Only Editor

Marco is a standalone editing application designed for standard desktop and notebook PCs.

Quantel announced its first software-only product at IBC. Marco is intended for users who want to work with Quantel’s editing interface away from an sQ system. According to the company, the software runs on standard desktop and notebook PCs, with camcorder video input and output handled over FireWire. Media files can be exported for transfer to a central facility.

“Quantel customers can now use the editing functions away from the sQ system, for example in remote offices or while travelling with a laptop,” said broadcast product manager John Woodhouse. He added that the familiar interface would remove the need for additional training.

Quantel says Marco includes many popular editing functions, including dissolves, wipes and other transitions. It also provides white-balance, lift, gain and gamma adjustments. Quantel’s new templating option can add text or graphic elements. PR manager Roger Thornton said Marco in its current form was not intended to compete with established NLE applications such as Apple Final Cut Pro. The software costs around £2,500. Quantel CEO Ray Cross described Marco as the first of several software products the company planned to announce.
