IBC: JVC Adds GY-HD251 to ProHD Range

The new model serves both studio and ENG/EFP work and is the first camera in JVC’s new 200 series.

JVC presented the GY-HD251 at IBC, a camcorder designed for applications ranging from studio use to ENG and EFP work. It records 720p/50 signals to tape and disk and outputs uncompressed 1080i/50 and 720p/50. The uncompressed live video signal is delivered over HD-SDI with embedded audio, which JVC described as unique among current HDV camcorders. The base version of the GY-HD251 costs €9,450 excluding VAT.

“The GY-HD251 is JVC’s response to demand from the European market for an affordable HD studio camera,” said Miguel Marino, responsible for European ProHD marketing at JVC. “The design and connectivity allow customers to integrate it into their existing infrastructure.” One option is the KA-HD250 studio adaptor, which JVC says provides full 26-pin compatibility. Power is supplied either by an IDX V-mount battery or a four-pin XLR power supply for studio use.

Compared with JVC’s earlier camcorders, the new model adds improved connectivity, including BNC interfaces, timecode input and output, SDI and HD-SDI outputs, and a six-pin remote-control connector. Its Focus Assist function for focusing in HD now offers three sensitivity levels. The LCD and separate viewfinder can now be switched on and used simultaneously.

Four new 1/3-inch bayonet-mount lenses from Canon and Fujinon were also expected to become available around IBC. Lenses for the 200-series camcorders use dynamic shading compensation, intended to minimise imaging errors without being affected by zoom position.

At its IBC stand, JVC also demonstrated 720p/50 processing in NLE systems from Adobe, Avid, Apple and Canopus.

JVC Professional Europe CEO Keisuke Yoshikawa said the ProHD concept had exceeded the company’s expectations and that the GY-HD251 was intended to continue the success of the 100 series, comprising the GY-HD110E and GY-HD111E. JVC reported worldwide sales of 20,000 ProHD camcorders and said the addition of 50 fps and 60 fps recording had further increased acceptance of the progressive implementation of the HDV standard.
