At 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, IBC 2006 closed its doors. At a total of 930 stands (previous year: 895), 1,200 exhibitors showed innovations from the field of film and television technology this year. Added to this were 50 exhibitors in the Mobile Zone and a further 30 exhibitors in the outdoor area.
Despite the increased number, the stands were no smaller than in the previous year. Sony had secured the largest stand – it occupied almost a quarter of the hall. At times it became cramped on the exhibition grounds, which is why the organisers had also moved registration to a separate tent in front of the exhibition halls.
By Tuesday evening, 44,808 (previous year: 42,815) visitors came to the trade show, and 65,000 had registered. Here too, an increase compared with the previous year can be recorded.
The organisers also see grounds for an optimistic assessment of the future of IBC in the stand reservations for next year: According to their information, 17,000 square metres of the total 42,000 square metres of exhibition space had already been rented by Tuesday morning.
The conference likewise recorded growing interest, not only from technicians but also from managers who had the latest techniques and developments explained to them here. The largest block, at four days, was devoted to the topic of IPTV, which as expected also occupied a great deal of space at the trade show.
A special distinction was the IBC International Honour for Excellence (IHFE) – an award presented to Aardman. The company shows that even as a classic stop-motion animation studio it is possible to move with the times and integrate new technologies, according to the jury’s verdict. A nice alternative programe was therefore also the lecture in which Aardman showed how stop-motion films are made – in the most laborious detailed work with only a few seconds of output per day: A nice contrast to all the real-time applications otherwise on display at the trade show.
IBC 2007 is again to take place at the RAI Amsterdam Exhibition and Congress Centre from September 6 to 11, 2007.
