With LG Electronics, Panasonic, NEC, Samsung, SiBEAM, Sony and Toshiba, some of the world’s largest television and video equipment manufacturers have joined forces to develop a common standard.

WirelessHD (or WiHD for short) is intended to enable wireless transmission of high-resolution audio and video data between consumer devices. The timetable provides for the specifications to be finalized as early as spring 2007. In a first step, adapters will handle the transmission; later, WiHD will then be implemented directly in the devices.

WirelessHD uses the 60 GHz frequency band for transmission, for which no licenses are required worldwide, and is intended to offer sufficient bandwidth from the outset to transmit images in HD format as well as audio.
