Adobe today announced the availability of Adobe Flash Player 9 for Linux. With the new software, Linux users can now use Flash content and applications on their operating systems.
Developers also have the free Adobe Flex 2 Software Developer Kit (SDK), a special standalone version of the player and the likewise free Flex Data Services 2 Express in order now to be able to create, test and implement Rich Internet applications on Linux platforms as well.
Flash Player 9 for Linux contains a series of new features, including more efficient memory use, improved functions for graphics, video and text, and the ActionScript Virtual Machine (AVM2), which enables scripting performance up to ten times faster.
Adobe recently made part of the source code of AVM2 available to the Mozilla Foundation for an open-source project. The Tamarin project is intended to advance the standards-based development of web applications across different platforms. The Tamarin source code is available via CVS (Open Source Version Control and Collaboration System) on the Mozilla website.

Adobe Flash Player 9 for Linux is now available as a free download on Adobe’s website. The Content Debugger as well as the standalone version of the player for developers can are also available there. Flash Player 9 for Linux will also be included during the course of the year in the Linux distributions sold by Novell and Red Hat.
