Sony has redesigned its professional LMD widescreen display range with four integrated monitors intended for analysing, previewing and editing footage during production.
Daniel Dubreuil, Senior Manager for Professional Monitor Product Marketing at Sony Europe, said the redesign reflected the growing move toward flat-panel HD displays and added tools tailored to professional requirements.
Sony positions the BVM-L230 as an advanced display for television and digital-cinema production, image evaluation and mastering. The 23-inch reference monitor uses a 1,920 × 1,080 panel, a 10-bit LCD driver and a high refresh rate. It supports SD and HD formats up to 1080/60p, 2,048 × 1,080/24p for D-Cinema, and VGA through WUXGA computer signals up to 1,920 × 1,200.
Its Precision Backlight system uses high-purity LEDs for a wider colour gamut, uniformity control and colour stability. A 12-bit signal-processing module is combined with a low-delay interlace-to-progressive algorithm and a colour-management system.
The integrated LMD-2450W and LMD-2050W widescreen monitors target technical directors, producers and editors in broadcasting, postproduction, event-video production, outside-broadcast vehicles and studios. Both support multiple formats and several I/O options. The LMD-2450W has a 24-inch WUXGA panel at 1,920 × 1,200, while the 20-inch LMD-2050W uses a 1,680 × 1,050 WSXGA+ panel.
Both monitors use 10-bit processing and Sony’s ChromaTru colour-management technology. ChromaTru is designed to compensate for LCD colour-gamut variation caused by differences in chromaticity coordinates, colour temperature and gamma curves, and it controls white balance through colour-space conversion.
The monitors automatically detect HD or SD sources and accept video and computer signals through DVI-D and HD15. Composite video, Y/C, RGB and component connections are standard, with D1 SDI and HD-SDI available as options. Automatic DVI source detection is also standard.
The new 20-inch LMD-2030W is the first Sony LMD monitor with an HDMI input. It targets lower-cost professional HDV monitoring and is compatible with HDV camcorders and decks used for mobile video production. Sony designed it for multipurpose work including event video and location shooting.
The LMD-2030W uses a 1,680 × 1,050 WSXGA+ panel and accepts several video signals. Its interfaces include composite video, Y/C, RGB and component as standard, with D1 SDI optional. Sony specifies correct colour-temperature reproduction and a 2.2 gamma curve.
Sony planned to ship the LMD-2450W and LMD-2050W in May 2007, followed by the LMD-2030W in June and the BVM-L230 later in the year.
