MDR Selects Sony MVS-8000A Switcher

MDR is adding a Sony MVS-8000A multiformat video switcher to the production control room at its Leipzig broadcast centre.

Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk selected Sony’s HD-capable MVS-8000A multiformat video switcher for a production control room during NAB. Sony said the switcher would enter service in the second half of 2007 as part of the broadcaster’s first multiformat control room.

The switcher supports SD and HD and is intended to provide a seamless migration to high-definition production. It includes an integrated DME, an internal frame store with animation functions, extensive keying controls and internal colour correction. An SRW-5500 will serve as the master recorder for archiving drama productions.

MDR operations director Gabriele Arlt described the investment as an important step in the broadcaster’s technical development. She said television was changing substantially because of new technologies and changing audience expectations, and that MDR wanted scheduled replacement investments to establish the technical basis for future digital broadcasting systems.
