Canon will ship its first AVCHD camcorder, the HR10, from August. It records to 8cm DVDs. Features include Canon’s HD camera system, Instant AF high-speed autofocus, an optical Super Range image stabiliser, HDMI and several still-camera functions. Combined with CINE mode, 25p progressive recording is intended to produce a film-like look. The camcorder records in HD or SD at either 4:3 or 16:9. The Canon HR10 was scheduled for retail availability in August 2007 at around €1,300.

The HR10’s 10× optical zoom lens was optimised for fine detail in HD recording. Its Full HD CMOS sensor has a resolution of 1,080 × 1,920 pixels and supports 1080i video. Canon says the RGB primary-colour filter and noise reduction produce sharp video with vivid, realistic colour. The DIGIC DV II processor handles HD signal processing and processes still-image and video signals separately, allowing high-resolution photographs to be captured while HD video is being recorded.
