Luxology, provider of the 3D modelling software Modo, has announced the “Luxology TV” video library, which is intended to help the 3D community exchange hi-res clips and educate itself using categorised clips. According to the provider’s plans, Luxology TV is to grow quickly into a kind of online reference work that provides information in video contributions on subjects such as modelling, rendering, painting, sculpting and – of course – Modo itself.

The majority of the contributions will be available for free retrieval, the company promises, while commercial instructional videos from Luxology and other providers will be downloadable for a fee. The video library is already live at http://www.luxology.tv, and the individual files are available as QuickTime films or streamed Flash video.

“Luxology TV is still in its initial stage and is currently being loaded with hi-res video content,” explains company head Brad Peebler: “Some of the first submissions are videos from Modo beta testers and highlight animation, sculpting and other new features of the forthcoming Modo 301.”

That Luxology chose video rather than stills for conveying learning content has several reasons. “Video is the most versatile medium for explaining how to work with 3D software, and Luxology has advocated its long for its use by including over 1 GByte of video with Modo, posting weekly video updates on our website and encouraging buyers to exchange their experiences with the help of video clips,” says Peebler.

Luxology TV is divided into two main categories: training and a gallery. The former contains “How to” clips, while the latter offers animations and videos without a direct instructional character. Users can browse video thumbnails or use search terms to specifically find subjects relevant to them, for example on UV editing.
