BerlinCalling launched an online marketplace for mobile video, sound and animation on 9 October 2007.
The platform combined a catalogue of formatted mobile content with a social network where artists could present work, create profiles and contact one another. BerlinCalling acted as an intermediary between creators and commercial customers.
Contracted artists retained their copyright and received 50 percent of distribution revenue. BerlinCalling said it had secured agreements with mobile operators and marketing aggregators.
Initial distribution partners included Materna and arena mobile, covering European and Asia-Pacific markets. The company was preparing further agreements for wider international distribution and worked with Germany’s Art Directors Club.
The project was founded by Berlin musician and video artist Tom Lang, whose previous work included film, advertising and mobile-content production.
