Until September 1, young filmmakers from all over the world were invited to submit their works for the 9th Hannover International Film Festival up-and-coming.
The biennial, at the conclusion of which three young talents are each awarded the ‘German Young Talent Film Award’ as well as its international counterpart, the ‘International Young Film Makers Award’, takes place in Hannover from November 22 to 25. A total of 2680 applications from 58 countries were received by the festival by September 1; with 1580 applications, well over half of the films come from Germany.
Trends at up-and-coming 2007
As was already apparent at up-and-coming 2005, the number of submitted
films has continued to rise this year as well. For the first time ever, filmmakers from Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Egypt have also sent their works to Hannover. An above-average number of applications came from Latin America, including Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. Most surprising result after an initial viewing: 21 submissions came from Iran, including works by young female filmmakers.
New at up-and-coming: Machinima Special
Machinima, composed of the words machine, animation and cinema, refers to films that are shot in the virtual worlds of computer games.
In cooperation with the Creative Gaming initiative, up-and-coming
is presenting a Machinima Special for the first time in 2007. The special comprises discussion rounds and film presentations; interested parties can also be shown how to make
Machinimas themselves.
Supporting programme: Wounds & Visions of the Megalopolises
The supporting programme ‘Wounds & Visions of the Megalopolises’ presents current
mood pictures by young film and sound artists as well as authors. This year
it is dedicated to the mega-cities Bombay and Cairo. The programmes were compiled
on site exclusively for up-and-coming. Curators Rajat Nagpal
(Bombay) and Mostafa Youssef (Cairo) are coming together with the artists
to Hannover.
Hannover International Film Festival
At the end of November, Hannover will once again be under the sign of young film: upand-
coming, the Hannover international Film Festival, takes place this year for the
9th time. up-and-coming is the young-talent competition that wants to give a very young
generation of filmmakers a first opportunity to make a name for themselves.
With the ‘German Young Talent Film Award’, endowed since 2005, and support extending in time
beyond the festival, up-and-coming achieves a lasting
effect. For the first time, this year’s award winners will be assigned a so-called mentor
who supports the young talent in a new project. The
first producer sponsorships are being taken on by Volker Engel, Peter Rommel and
Regina Ziegler. up-and-coming is supported by an international board of trustees
and is under the patronage of Federal President Horst Köhler.
