Datacolor introduced Spyder3Elite and Spyder3Studio as the third generation of its monitor-calibration and printer-profiling range. The Spyder3 colorimeter used seven colour detectors and a larger measurement aperture, which Datacolor said increased light sensitivity by 400 percent.
An integrated ambient-light sensor could measure and continuously monitor viewing conditions. StudioMatch aligned luminance across multiple displays, while background monitoring checked both the active calibration and ambient light.
SpyderProof supplied 16 reference images for evaluating saturation, skin tones, gradients, shadows and highlights after calibration. The ReCAL function reduced repeat calibration to two and a half minutes. Users could work through a guided interface or set white point, gamma and other parameters from an expert console.
Spyder3Elite supported LCD, CRT, laptop and front-projector displays on Windows XP 32-bit or 64-bit, Windows Vista and Mac OS X. Spyder3Studio added printer profiling with the Datacolor 1005 spectrocolorimeter and created ICC profiles for monitors and printers. Its rewritten software ran as a Universal Binary on Intel-based Macs.
