Yesterday, the President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering, presented the Prix Lux at a ceremonial plenary session in Strasbourg to producer Klaus Maeck of “corazón international” and to leading actress Hanna Schygulla for Fatih Akin’s film “The Edge of Heaven”.

With the newly created Prix Lux, the European Parliament wants to demonstrate its special commitment to culture in the 50th year of the European Community’s existence. The aim of the Prix Lux is to illuminate the public debate about European integration and to promote the distribution of European films in the European Union.

After Fatih Akin’s film “The Edge of Heaven” received the prize for Best Screenplay in Cannes and will enter the coming race for the Oscar for Germany, the presentation of the Prix Lux represents another important honor for the film and its director Fatih Akin: “My films always move between different cultures, they are virtually ‘wanderers between worlds’. For this reason, I am very pleased about the prize.”

Thanks to the Prix Lux, “The Edge of Heaven” will now be subtitled in the 23 official languages of the European Union and a 35mm print produced for each language version. In addition, the original version of the film will be adapted for people with impaired hearing.
