Hobnox released American Landing: Jimi Hendrix Live at Monterey in its interactive Hypershow format on the US channel Mi145.com. Narrated by Henry Rollins, the documentary used previously unreleased material including interviews with former band members Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding, former manager Chas Chandler and Hendrix himself.
Branching multimedia format
The Hypershow initially appeared as conventional high-quality video, but viewers could leave the main narrative to explore related material. On-screen icons opened additional audio, video, photographs or text.
Available branches included interviews, biographical information, alternate versions of music tracks and slideshows covering locations and events. Viewers could spend any amount of time away from the original sequence and return to the main story when they chose.
Hobnox chief executive Alfred Tolle described the project as an early example of internet distribution connecting production and presentation. Experience Hendrix managing director Janie Hendrix said the interactive format was intended to introduce the musician’s work to a new generation.
