Also new is that students can choose between a specialisation and a broadly diversified course of study. The course begins with smaller compulsory modules from all professors in the orientation stage in the 1st semester, in order to prepare the students’ choices for the rest of their studies. After that, the course is continuously project-oriented and organised in elective modules for the students.
From Perception to Everyday Culture
Overarching, thematically bound competencies with increasing demands are assigned to the individual semesters: The 2nd semester, for example, is about “Perceiving, Analysing, Designing”, the 3rd semester about “Applied Design” and the 4th semester about “Context”. The practical semester is scheduled for the 5th semester, the 6th semester deals with “Everyday Culture”, and the Bachelor’s thesis is produced in the 7th semester.
The modules are supplemented by an input of workshops, guest lectures and seminars by external experts from society, business and science, in order to contribute to the professional handling of contexts and expand everyday-cultural competencies.
Professionally Qualifying Degree
The Bachelor’s degree programme in Design offers a first professionally qualifying degree and enables students to undertake design and academic work in design-oriented Master’s degree programmes.
Creativity Is Required
Anyone who wants to study design must have artistic and creative talent. The aptitude examination for the course consists of a preselection, a practical examination and a colloquium. The preselection determines admission to the practical examination and the colloquium. For this, applicants must submit 30 to 40 works. The work samples can consist of photographs, film and video recordings, animations, computer graphics, drawings, studies, paintings or prints. Digital data must be available as a printout and on data carriers (CD/DVD). By submitting the work samples, the applicant declares in writing that he produced the works independently.
Registration at the Student Office
Registration for the course takes place at the Student Office, and submission of the work samples in the
secretariat of the Faculty of Design. Registration for the summer semester 2008 runs until December 15, 2007.
After the preselection, applicants are notified in writing or invited to the practical examination, respectively. This lasts a total of two days and takes place at the beginning of February.
