Networking specialist D-Link http://www.dlink.de has introduced the DIR-300, a WLAN router that is delivered with IPTV support. The device is designed for smaller offices and private use. It is particularly suitable for time-critical applications such as internet television, multimedia streams and VoIP applications, which require a correspondingly good internet connection, D-Link said in a dispatch. For this the device supports the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP), which is a prerequisite for IP multicasting on the internet.
The DIR-300 has four Fast Ethernet ports and a WAN interface with a speed of 10/100 megabits per second. The device supports the IEEE 802.11g specification, enabling a maximum wireless transmission rate of 54 megabits per second. The D-Link product is also equipped with advanced firewall protection. Data transmission can be protected by means of VPN Passthrough Support for IPSec, PPTP and L2TP. Access to the wireless network is secured by the WPA and WPA2 encryption technologies.
Uninterrupted data transmission for video streams and when using VoIP is ensured by Quality of Service. In gaming mode, by contrast, the router delivers particularly low ping times, thereby optimising gaming on the web, according to the manufacturer. Other functions include integrated parental controls and a content filter with blacklist and whitelist options, which are intended to prevent access to unwanted content and websites. The DIR-300 will be available in stores from February 2008. According to D-Link, the price is around 60 euros.
