The combined strategy of conspicuous focus planning and relying on quality programming has paid off. In 2007, ARTE has so far achieved the greatest programming success in Germany since its inception. The broadcaster reaches a market share of 0.9 percent in Germany between 7 and 11 p.m., and a market share of 3.4 percent in France. Since 2003, the broadcaster has almost doubled its number of viewers in Germany.
ARTE will launch with a new schedule on January 1, 2008. For the first time in the broadcaster’s history, it will be possible to offer primetime starts in Germany and France at familiar switching times, at 8.15 p.m. in Germany and 9 p.m. in France. The second primetime block also gains clear switching times at 10.30 and 11.00 p.m. Strong ARTE brands, profile-defining programmes such as Musica, the Great Documentary, Cinema Discovery and the new weekly cultural documentary thus move forward. As the second pillar of the new schedule, space is available in the first primetime from 9 p.m. for large-scale focus planning.
Since October 2007, the online offering “ARTE+7” has been available to all internet users in Germany and France. After ZDF, ARTE is the second broadcaster in Germany – and the first in France – to make its programmes regularly available on its own site on the internet for seven days. At present, around one third of the programming can be accessed in this way.
