The CS48DV2 is a fixed-function, two-channel processor that supports Dolby Volume and is already in volume production. The technology continuously regulates perceived loudness to keep television programmes, advertising breaks and channel changes at a consistent listening level. Cirrus Logic plans further Dolby Volume audio DSPs for AV receivers, compact home-theatre systems and stereo equipment.
Terry Ritchie, DSP Marketing Director at Cirrus Logic, describes Dolby Volume as a key digital-TV feature for 2008 and says the CS48DV2 allows manufacturers to implement it quickly and at low cost.
Dolby Volume uses a sound processor informed by research into human perception and the processing of sound. It combines two loudness-control technologies called Modeler and Leveler.
The Leveler continuously measures the perceived loudness of audio and applies multiband gain changes through perceptual-processing logic. Audio from different sources can therefore be reproduced at the same subjective level.
At low playback levels, the human ear loses detail in audio content. Volume Modeler continuously analyses and modifies the signal based on both content loudness and playback level, reconstructing it to correspond with a reference listening level. The intended result is improved imaging, intelligibility and audibility.
The CS48DV2 is available in a 48-pin QFP package and in production quantities.
