Screen Visions will equip Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium with a second video wall for UEFA EURO 2008. Commissioned by Philips, the Stuttgart company will install a 75-square-meter Lighthouse R12 wall in one of the two fan ends for the European football championship from 7 to 29 June 2008.
The wall consists of nine by seven modules, weighs five tonnes, and has a high-resolution pixel pitch of twelve millimeters. Together with the permanently installed Philips screen, the temporary wall will provide images, information, and slow-motion replays for an expected 50,000 spectators.
Philips previously relied on Screen Visions during the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, when the Stuttgart team supported all video walls at official public-viewing sites in the twelve host cities.
Heavy Installation Requires a Delicate Touch
The temporary LED wall and its supporting structure, which weighs almost another four tonnes, will be installed in the stadium’s second tier. Screen Visions must distribute the weight of the wall and structure evenly from a structural-engineering perspective.
The complete installation has to be performed manually because access is unavailable from both the stadium interior and the roof. The system will make its debut during a test match in March 2008. The wall will then be dismantled and reinstalled two weeks before the European championship.
The Ernst Happel Stadium will host Austria’s group matches, two quarterfinals, one semifinal, and the final during the forthcoming football summer.
