HAW Hamburg GamecityLab Acquires CryENGINE 2 License

The HAW Hamburg and Hamburg@work GamecityLab has acquired a Crytek license to use CryENGINE 2 for teaching and research in interdisciplinary projects and bachelor’s and master’s work across media computing, audio/video technology, and design.

CryENGINE and CryENGINE 2 are software packages for game developers that render three-dimensional worlds with outstanding graphics quality. Computer games use the sophisticated software to stage increasingly realistic and effects-rich scenarios on screen.

Licensing this advanced software for academic work gives students insight into current game-production practice. Research into the innovative technology is also intended to lead to new products. The goal is to train students for forward-looking fields including game programming, game design, and production, and to develop products such as virtual films, or machinima, and events with new content.

“The opportunity to use CryENGINE 2 in research and teaching gives students an intensive insight into game-production practice. They learn to reflect on and evaluate practical production possibilities scientifically and create new kinds of prototypes. This cooperation between industry and academia aims to develop Germany as a game-production location and potentially steer it in new directions, such as education,” says Professor Gunther Rehfeld, professor of digital image processing, graphics, and animation at HAW Hamburg.
