Michael Ballhaus selected the Sony F23 as the acquisition system. He presented the project at the “Adapting to Climate Change – Research Strategies for Bavaria” congress at the Munich Chamber of Commerce academy on 22 February 2008.
Ballhaus Environmental Spots is one of two film projects in the cinematographer’s climate-protection initiative. Ballhaus will work with students from the German Film and Television Academy Berlin on several environmental advertising films.
A comprehensive documentary about climate protection is also planned over the following three years.
At the initiative’s launch, the team recorded statements from politics, science and business during the Munich climate congress in February 2008, capturing the material in full length with HD equipment.
Ballhaus chose the Sony F23 as the acquisition platform after testing the HD camera’s functions at the annual Band Pro Hands on HD event in Hanover in July 2007.
“Documentary production always involves a large volume of material, and HD technology provides clear advantages,” says Gerhard Baier. “The tapes run longer, while archiving, viewing and processing bring substantial financial advantages in postproduction compared with conventional 35 mm methods. Economical production is particularly important for a nonprofit project.”
