Samsung Develops Eight-Megapixel Phone Camera

Samsung introduces a miniature eight-megapixel camera module intended for future mobile phones.

The CMOS module measures 28 × 15.3 × 8.5 millimetres. Samsung describes it as the world’s thinnest camera module and intends it for future generations of mobile phones. The unit combines the sensor, optics, autofocus and required electronics. The company says its size has been reduced by ten percent compared with the five-megapixel version.

Specifications include sensitivity up to ISO 1600. A minimum focusing distance of one centimetre supports macro photography. Samsung has also integrated functions found in current digital cameras, including face detection and smile capture, which releases the shutter when the person in the viewfinder smiles. The company plans to move the module into mass production during the second quarter of 2008, potentially allowing phones equipped with it to reach the market before Christmas.

Megapixel count is a strong marketing and sales argument, but says little about image quality. Light is usually the largest problem for camera modules built into phones. Colour reproduction and image noise are also important measures. Leading devices at the time offer five-megapixel resolution, which is sufficient for small-format prints. Models include Nokia’s N95 and N82, LG’s KU990 Viewty, Samsung’s SGH-G800 and Sony Ericsson’s K850i.
