ZDF Director-General Markus Schächter has firmly rejected recent statements by the Commission for the Protection of Minors in the Media, which is responsible for private television and telemedia services. In an interview, its chairman Wolf-Dieter Ring had called for his youth-protection oversight to be extended to public-service broadcasters. Ring should concern himself with the youth-protection problems of private broadcasters instead of pursuing the expansion of his institution, Schächter said. It would also be a step backwards in youth media protection if the public-service broadcasting system of statutory youth-protection oversight, secured at several levels, extremely well proven and even rooted in society, were replaced by a model in which, among other things, a need for improvement and shortcomings in enforcement had only recently been identified.
