“Sweded” films are based on an idea launched by Jack Black, star of Michel Gondry’s new film “Be Kind Rewind.” The concept is simply to use homemade props and equipment, a handful of friends, and considerable ingenuity to shoot a personal version of a favorite film. The main characters played by Jack Black and Mos Def do the same in “Be Kind Rewind” after accidentally erasing every videotape in their video store. They take matters into their own hands and bring new life to the neighborhood with their sweded videos.
For the theatrical release, an official film special offers amateur directors prizes including a trip to New York with an acting workshop at the New York Film Academy. Even before the film opened in German cinemas, numerous creative MyVideo users had sweded favorite films ranging from Scary Movie and Indiana Jones to Rocky and Titanic. These personal versions of cinema classics have already been watched more than 380,000 times on MyVideo.de. Sweded videos can enter the special through 23 April.
“The sweding trend has been enthusiastically embraced by numerous video directors,” said Dominic Hesse, Head of Content and Partnerships at Magic Internet GmbH, MyVideo.de’s media agency. “Films, whether reenacted, parodied, or otherwise reworked, have always been a major inspiration for the MyVideo community. ‘Be Kind Rewind’ and the joint MyVideo campaign now provide another reason to pick up a camera and remake a favorite film with friends in an individual version.”
