When Cologne Cathedral’s bells ring for Sunday morning Mass, people around the world start their computers and connect to the internet. At http://www.domradio.de, they can experience the service live in picture and sound.
domradio, Germany’s first diocesan broadcaster, is now transmitting its video streams with Geißendörfer & Leschinsky GmbH. The Cologne systems company for streaming, software development, and internet services has expanded delivery so the video stream can be accessed by an unlimited number of simultaneous users while maintaining quality. Around 10,000 stream requests were recorded over the Easter holidays. Six services were transmitted online from Good Friday through Easter Monday, including the Easter Vigil liturgy and the pontifical Mass on Easter Sunday with Cologne Cardinal Meisner. “We deliver the video streams through the worldwide server network of our partner Limelight. This ensures there are no bottlenecks even on special holidays and everyone can follow the service online,” said Managing Director Alexander Leschinsky. The next service expected to draw particularly high traffic is on 20 April, when Cardinal Meisner celebrates the pontifical Mass marking the third anniversary of Cardinal Ratzinger’s election as pope.
Every Sunday from 10:00, Geißendörfer & Leschinsky also brings Mass from Cologne Cathedral live to the internet. The stream is available at http://www.domradio.de in Windows Media format at 1 Mbit/s.
domradio also intends to work with the company on its radio program. The Cologne business is expected to deliver the internet radio stream in the near future, allowing any number of domradio listeners worldwide to hear the broadcaster’s religious message and programming online.
G&L Geißendörfer & Leschinsky GmbH has transmitted audio and video over the internet since 1999. The systems company makes live and on-demand content from broadcasters, companies, and public authorities available worldwide, including radio and television programs, cultural and sporting events, conferences, and corporate events.
