“This marks the second phase of our long-term strategy of backing Blu-ray Disc,” said Primera Managing Director Andreas Hoffmann. After initially staying out of the dispute over the successor to DVD, the company soon committed to Blu-ray support. Primera has belonged to the Blu-ray consortium since 2005, alongside more than 170 other companies.
Hoffmann expressed relief that the contest over DVD’s successor had ended because “companies and consumers can finally gain confidence in the optical medium of the future, and the reluctance to purchase should come to an end.” He said the industry had been badly harmed by the long battle between two standards, each supported by prominent companies, and estimated the financial loss in Europe alone at hundreds of millions of euros.
Hoffmann rejected predictions that Blu-ray Disc would also disappear soon. He acknowledged that many people now download films and music directly to PC hard drives but argued that consumers still value packaged copies and that external media are safer than PC hard drives. He also cited cumbersome or slow downloads as barriers. Blu-ray has other applications as well: its capacity makes it suitable in business for long-term, audit-compliant storage of critical data or for producing elaborate corporate presentations.
