DP: Your company now belongs to the giant Getty Images. What has changed?

Thompson: Getty in this form is only ten years old, and the good thing is that they let us do our own thing completely. Getty has put a lot of money into the company, and we have been able to expand technologically. Getty gave us its keywording know-how. In addition to English, we can now serve customers in eleven other languages. Anyone searching for something in their own language will find it. That is how we became a major international player overnight. The keywords that creatives assign to their videos or photos are also translated automatically.

DP: How is iStockvideo’s video business going?

Thompson: Five percent of our business is video. We have over 60,000 videos in our collection, and accesses are increasing. Of course, they are not growing as quickly as in the photo segment, but the technical requirements, such as upload times, are also greater. Every sequence released in our system has been checked by one of our 90 inspectors. Around 45,000 photos per week and around 5,000 videos per month have to be inspected – although this is considerably more time-consuming than for photos.
