Sun Microsystems has expanded the platform also known as StreamStar with Sun Fire X4150 servers using quad-core Intel Xeon processors, Sun Fire X4600 servers using AMD Opteron processors and the Sun StorageTek 2530 array. The company also announced release 2 of its Sun Streaming Software, based on Solaris 10. Sun says the platform can serve between 500 and 1.5 million subscribers cost-effectively and retain more than one million hours of video content.
The current Sun Streaming System is intended to give telecommunications providers flexibility, high scalability and a low entry cost for small and large video-on-demand services. Resellers, partners and independent software vendors also support the new server, storage and streaming platform.
