BBC World Becomes BBC World News

The BBC is updating the name and appearance of its international television news channel.

BBC World, the BBC’s advertising-funded, 24-hour television news and information channel, is called BBC World News from today.

The change follows an audience study indicating that BBC World News better describes the channel’s content. In recent years, the focus has increasingly shifted toward current news and programming.

“According to research in our core markets, our viewers regard BBC World News as the most descriptive name for the channel. Over the past five years, we have expanded our news programming. We now offer everything from breaking news to reports and cover business, sport, science and entertainment. The new name reflects the scope of our work much more clearly,” says Sian Kevill, Editorial Director of BBC World News.

A refreshed channel logo and on-air graphics accompany the name change, aligning the channel with the BBC’s corporate presence in the United Kingdom and its international news programs. The step creates a consistent identity and greater transparency in an increasingly competitive global news market.

The range of programs will remain under the BBC World News name. While the channel will continue to focus on reporting the latest international news, programs such as “Click” and “HARDtalk,” along with its popular weekend documentaries, will continue.
